Yes, BUT! A car insurance is subject to a contract and generally a notice period of 3 months. In this article we talk about the different possible terminations called “ordinary” and “extraordinary”.
The basics of canceling vehicle insurance
In Switzerland, to cancel car insurance, you must respect the notice periods specified in your insurance policy. These deadlines generally vary depending on the company but are often three months.
Termination takes effect on the date of receipt by the insurance company and not on the postmark date. It is recommended to send the termination request by registered mail to have proof of sending.
The differences between ordinary and extraordinary termination:
- Ordinary termination : It can be carried out at the end of the contract or at the end of a contract year, depending on what is provided for in the policy. A right of termination is also possible after three years of contract, in accordance with theArticle 35a of the Insurance Contract Act.
- Extraordinary termination : It allows the contract to be terminated early in specific cases, such as the sale of the vehicle, change of owner, an increase in the insurance premium, an accident, or a move abroad. These situations allow for immediate termination, regardless of the usual deadlines.
Ordinary cancellation of auto insurance
In Switzerland, ordinary cancellation of car insurance is governed by the conditions specified in the insurance policy. In general, you can cancel your insurance:
- At the end of the contract : generally at the end of the contractual year. We can also note special cases like “car insurance for the weekend” which lasts a short, well-defined period.
- After three years : according to article 35a of the law on insurance contracts, even if you have subscribed for a longer period. The standard notice period is often three months, with termination taking effect on the date received by the insurer, not the postmark date.
To cancel your auto insurance, written notification is required. Typical steps include:
- Writing a termination letter : Use a termination letter template, if available, and personalize it with your information.
- Shipping by registered mail : to have proof of the sending date.
- Confirmation from the insurer : Make sure you receive written confirmation of termination from your insurer.
- Respect of deadlines : send your termination letter so that it is received by the insurer before the deadline for the notice period.
Extraordinary termination case
Case 1: If you change your vehicle or if the owner of the vehicle changes (for example, in the event of sale), you have the right to terminate your car insurance in an extraordinary manner. Termination can be immediate, particularly when the new circulation permit is issued for the new vehicle.
Case 2: In the event of a claim, you have the option of canceling your car insurance within 14 days following settlement of the claim. In addition, if your insurer changes the conditions of the contract, in particular by increasing premiums, this also gives you the right to terminate the contract early.
Case 3: If you sell your car, the insurance coverage is automatically transferred to the new owner, but may be refused by the latter or by the insurer. If you withdraw your vehicle (for example, if you stop using it or move abroad), you can also cancel your car insurance in an extraordinary manner. A move to Switzerland, however, is not considered a valid reason for an extraordinary termination.
How does canceling your vehicle insurance work, step by step?
- Consult your current insurance policy to find out the duration of the contract and the cancellation deadlines.
- Write a written termination letter, preferably by registered mail, to prove that you sent it on time. You will need to mention the desired termination date, your policy number, your address, sign the letter and clearly state your desire to stop your insurance.
- Send your termination letter to the insurer respecting the notice period, generally three months.
- Check the date of receipt by the insurer, because it is this date that counts, not the date of sending.
- Be aware of holidays and leave that may delay receipt of your application.
