What is travel insurance used for?
Swiss travel insurance offers, such as those offered by Zurich, Allianz or the TCS Livret ETI, generally combine several blocks: cancellation fees, personal assistance, repatriation, baggage, vehicle breakdown assistance abroad and sometimes legal protection. However, each contract sets its own ceilings, deductibles, coverage areas and exclusions.
The challenge is therefore not just to buy “travel insurance”, but to understand what is already covered by your current insurance, what is actually missing and what needs to be organized in the event of an emergency.
Guarantees to look at first
- Cancellation and interruption: reimbursement of travel expenses if you cannot leave or have to interrupt your stay for an insured reason.
- Medical assistance: arranging transport to an appropriate hospital, coordinating with relatives and returning if necessary.
- Repatriation: support and organization of medically justified return to Switzerland or a suitable establishment.
- Baggage: compensation in the event of loss, theft, damage or delay, with purchase of essential items according to the contract.
- Vehicle abroad: breakdown assistance, towing, return of passengers or repatriation of the vehicle according to the formula.
- Travel legal protection: support in the event of a dispute related to travel, abroad or an accident depending on the conditions.
Beware of common gaps
Abroad, compulsory Swiss health insurance is not always sufficient to absorb all emergency costs. Costs for rescue, medical transport, repatriation or certain treatments can create significant amounts. The services also vary depending on whether you are traveling in Europe, outside Europe, alone, with family, with your car or with a rental vehicle.
- Check if the coverage is valid for a single trip or all year round.
- Compare Europe, world, Switzerland included or excluded, and maximum length of stay.
- Check the limits for cancellation, baggage, medical expenses, rescue and repatriation.
- See if pandemics, pre-existing illnesses, risky sports or countries not recommended are excluded.
- Avoid duplicates with bank card, supplementary health insurance, TCS, car manufacturer or household insurance.
What formula for your situation?
A weekend in Europe, a world tour, a family vacation and occasional business trips do not require the same protection. A person who travels often will sometimes benefit from annual coverage. A person who once goes on an expensive trip will especially look for a solid cancellation and clear medical assistance.
