Who is this cover for?
Professional legal protection concerns people whose activity may generate disputes: exposed employees, executives, self-employed people, consultants, liberal professions, micro-enterprises or individual entrepreneurs. Depending on the insurers, a small independent activity can sometimes be covered in a private module up to a limited turnover; beyond that, dedicated corporate legal protection becomes necessary.
The objective is simple: to have access to lawyers, to have a situation examined, to defend your interests and to finance the costs of lawyers, proceedings, expertise, mediation or costs when the dispute enters into the contract.
Frequent professional situations
- Employment contract: contested dismissal, work certificate, unpaid salary, overtime or conflict with employer.
- Customers and suppliers: unpaid invoice, disputed service, non-compliant delivery, terminated mandate or misinterpreted contract.
- Collaborators: labor law disputes if you employ staff, even in a small structure.
- Professional premises: disagreement with the lessor, work, defects, use of the premises or restitution.
- Insurance and authorities: denied benefits, contested decision, administrative procedure or regulatory question.
- Internet and reputation: harmful opinion, personality attack, copyright or digital conflict depending on the modules.
Legal protection or professional civil liability?
Professional civil liability covers damage you cause to a third party in your activity, for example an error in advice, negligence or professional misconduct which results in financial loss. Legal protection is mainly used to assert your rights or to manage contractual, administrative or labor disputes.
The two covers are complementary. If a client claims damages from you for a professional error, professional liability is often central. If a supplier does not respect its contract, if a customer does not pay or if a commercial lease poses a problem, legal protection can become decisive.
What to check before subscribing
- Your status: employee, self-employed, sole proprietorship, Sàrl, SA, liberal profession or ancillary activity.
- The turnover covered: certain private protections strongly limit independent activity and cease if the threshold is exceeded.
- The modules: daily life of the company, customers and suppliers, labor law, premises, vehicles, recovery, cyber or tax law.
- The ceilings: maximum amount per dispute, territory covered and possible deductible.
- Exclusions: already existing disputes, intentional acts, fines, conflicts between policyholders of the same policy or undeclared areas.
- Waiting times: certain contractual or employment disputes are only covered after a waiting period.
Why subscribe before the conflict?
Legal protection does not serve to insure a problem that has already arisen. If the invoice is already contested, if the dismissal has already been announced or if the procedure has already been opened, the case will generally be considered pre-existing. The correct approach is to put the hedge in place when the activity starts, expands or changes risk level.
