What is obligatory in Switzerland
In Switzerland, motor vehicle liability is mandatory to register a motor vehicle. Without an electronic insurance certificate sent to the cantonal automobile service, you cannot obtain the plates or the circulation permit.
This liability covers material damage and bodily injury caused to third parties with your vehicle. It does not automatically cover repairs to your own car: for this, you need to look at comprehensive insurance coverage.
RC, partial casco or full casco: what to choose?
- Civil liability: obligatory. It covers third party claims if you cause damage with your vehicle.
- Partial Casco: optional. It generally protects against events such as theft, fire, hail, broken glass, collisions with animals or certain damage caused by martens, depending on the contract.
- Complete insurance: it includes partial comprehensive insurance and adds collision damage to your own vehicle, even if you are at fault.
- Leasing: the full casco is in practice often required by the lessor, even if it is not imposed by law.
Options that really change the premium
Swiss insurers like Allianz, AXA, Zurich or others often build their offers around a mandatory base and modular options. Two contracts can therefore have the same name, but not at all the same level of protection.
- Deductible: the higher it is, the more the premium can fall, but the more your contribution to the claim increases.
- Bonus protection: useful if you want to limit the impact of a responsible claim on your future premium.
- Parking damage: interesting if your vehicle often sleeps outside or in public parking lots.
- Increased market value: important for recent vehicles, because a car quickly loses value.
- Support: breakdown assistance, towing, continuation of the trip or replacement vehicle depending on the formula.
- Legal protection for traffic: help in the event of a dispute with a garage, another driver, insurance or an authority.
What coverage according to your vehicle?
A new car, a leased vehicle, a five-year-old family car and a small old car should not be insured in the same way. The right choice depends on the value of the vehicle, your budget, your ability to absorb a repair and your daily use.
- New or high-value vehicle: a full comprehensive insurance policy is often relevant.
- Leased vehicle: check the exact requirements of the leasing contract.
- Older vehicle: a partial comprehensive insurance or a RC alone can sometimes be enough.
- Young driver or frequent driver: the deductible, bonus and assistance deserve special attention.
