What is private legal protection for?

Private legal protection provides legal aid when you need to assert your rights or defend yourself in everyday life. Depending on the contract, it can cover legal advice, lawyer fees, court fees, expertise fees, mediation fees or costs owed to the opposing party.

It is not obligatory in Switzerland, but it can be very useful: a lease, employment or consumer dispute can cost several thousand francs, even when your position is defensible.

Common disputes covered

  • Lease and accommodation: rent increase, restitution of guarantee, housing defects, contested termination or conflict with the management.
  • Work: dismissal, unpaid salary, work certificate, overtime or conflict with the employer.
  • Purchases and contracts: online purchase not delivered, defective device, contested subscription, craftsman or service provider who does not respect the contract.
  • Neighborhood and home: nuisances, property boundaries or damage depending on the formula and the status of tenant or owner.
  • Health and insurance: disagreement with insurance, daily allowances, refused services or dispute related to the patient's rights.
  • Internet and personality: reputational damage, identity theft, platform dispute or digital purchase depending on the modules included.

What is often excluded or limited

Not all cases are covered. Divorces, inheritances, tax disputes, intentional violations, procedures already in progress and conflicts arising before subscription are often excluded or limited to simple advice. Some contracts also provide for waiting periods, particularly for contractual areas such as leases or work.

This is why you must check the general conditions before subscribing: areas covered, maximum amount per dispute, deductible, territory, waiting period and terms of choice of an external lawyer.

Private, circulation or combined?

Private legal protection covers everyday disputes. Traffic legal protection covers disputes linked to mobility: accident, license withdrawal, purchase, leasing or repair of vehicle. Many Swiss insurers offer a combined formula, often more coherent for families, motorists and people who want broad coverage.

Who is it particularly useful for?

  • Tenants who want support when dealing with a management company or a lessor.
  • Employees who are highly dependent on their income or fear a work conflict.
  • Families who multiply purchases, subscriptions, services and litigation risks.
  • Owners who need to check if a building or neighborhood module is necessary.
  • People who often shop online or use many digital services.
