What insurance is required?
In Switzerland, certain insurance concerns almost everyone. LAMal basic health insurance is compulsory for any person domiciled in Switzerland, with a deadline of three months after arrival or birth. Accident insurance is also compulsory: employees working at least eight hours per week with the same employer are in principle covered by the employer's LAA, while others must include accident risk in their health insurance.
If you own a motor vehicle, motor vehicle liability is mandatory to obtain plates. For owners, building insurance against fire and natural damage is compulsory in most cantons, with cantonal rules. Household insurance is generally optional, except in particular in the cantons of Vaud, Nidwalden, Friborg and Jura for fire risks and natural events.
Protections often essential
Not everything is obligatory, but certain coverage avoids very heavy financial consequences. Private civil liability is rarely imposed by law, but it is strongly recommended and often requested by property managers when signing a lease. Household insurance protects your belongings against claims such as theft, fire, water damage or natural events. Supplementary health insurance can finance what basic insurance does not cover or only partially: hospitalization, dental care, glasses, complementary medicine or care abroad.
Choose according to your situation
- You are a tenant: check the household insurance, private liability and any requirements of your lease or management.
- You are the owner: check building insurance, water damage, installations, furniture and legal protection.
- You have a car: distinguish between compulsory liability, partial casco, full casco and assistance.
- You have a family: anticipate health, dental, accident, civil liability and household financial security.
- You arrive in Switzerland: respect LAMal deadlines, clarify the accident and avoid duplication with your former country.

How Finwise helps you decide
Our role is not to make you multiply insurance policies. We start from your real situation: canton, housing, family, vehicle, professional activity, existing contracts, budget and priority risks. Then, we compare the offers, exclusions, deductibles, deadlines and ceilings to build coherent coverage.
This approach often allows you to save money without sacrificing protection: remove the accident from LAMal if you are covered by the employer, adjust the deductible, avoid two insurance policies that cover the same risk, or strengthen a truly exposed guarantee.
Our support
You receive a simple reading of what is required, recommended or optional. Finwise then assists you with requests for offers, changes of insurer and terminations, taking into account the deadlines and necessary written confirmations.
